In memoriam

We record with profound sadness the demise of our Founder President, Godfrey Gunatillake in July 2011. He was also the Immediate Past President.

In addition to the death of Godfrey Gunatillake, the following deaths of Peterites from this batch were reported to the Committee during this period:

Shelley Wickremasinghe, Noel Jayasundera, Jude Muttiah, Mohan Abeysekera, Russel Morias, Errol Cramer, Ranjith de Alwis, William de Alwis, Nihal Ranasinghe, Upali Siriwardena, Chandra Grero and also George Suraweera (Staff)
Get together Dinner at “Raja Bojun” – 3rd December 2011

A very well attended dinner was held for members and their spouses at the “Raja Bojun”. This has become a very popular event in the Calendar of not only the members belonging to this group but old Peterites of a younger vintage not to mention other well wishers and Sam the Man kept the toes a tapping with his music

145 tickets were sold and we record with pleasure that the surplus made was Rs. 97,510/-.

The committee thanks the sponsors, well wishers, members all who helped to make a success.
Donation of Scholarships

Appreciating the donation of scholarships by our batch group last year, several old Peterites belonging to this batch, have donated funds to offer more scholarships this year.

Rs.77,500/- received specifically for scholarships from Anil Perera (Australia), Joe Rayan (USA) and Kumar Paul (Snr.) - (Sri Lanka), are highly appreciated by the batch and we have arranged for the donation of 5 scholarships for 2 years through these funds. Although the batch preferred to donate scholarships to A/L or O/L students, since the ones identified by Fr. Rector were from lower grades, the Committee agreed to fund these lower grade students who were in dire need of scholarships.

In addition to these scholarships, the batch group has also arranged to donate 4 scholarships for 1 year through our own funds, including one for a student whose father has been paralysed consequent to a motor accident. This recommendation came from one of our own committee members and the committee agreed on this after verifying the facts.

With this noble act receiving due publicity, the Melbourne branch of the SPC OBU has decided to donate several scholarships which will be to the value of Aus $ 1250 and our batch group is coordinating the donation of these scholarships too.

This will also be arranged later in May or early June.

The Peterite Walk

The OBU has organised the Peterite Walk for 13th May 2012 for the noble cause of renovating the chapel.

Members our batch group decided to participate, thus contributing through the purchase of T shirts and in addition our batch group agreed to donate Rs.50,000/- from our funds towards this cause. It was also decided that if the funds allowed the donation of an additional Rs.25,000/- towards this cause, the donation will be increased. This decision was to be taken closer to the event.

Accounts

The audited accounts will be circulated among members at the meeting (if not prior to it - via email)

Looking Ahead

The committee attempted to resurrect the project of a home for the destitute old Peterites but regrettably was not able to do so. However an old Peterite has come forward with an offer of land in Kegalle for a project of this nature and the batch would like the newly appointed committee to explore the possibility and make its comprehensive recommendations, including the constructing and running of such an institute.

Any Other Business
SPC OBU
The house invited the OBU President to keep them informed of the affairs of the OBU and the Roshan Dharmaratne said that this group was one of the more vibrant and active groups and said that this was evident from the healthy bank balance. He said that the OBU had an excellent dance which realised Rs.13.5 million part of which was used for a project to repair and refurbish all the toilets in the College and also the pavilion. Answering a question raised by Jayantha Atapattu regarding swimming not reaching acceptable levels unlike some other sports, Roshan explained that all the sports which were supported by foundations were doing well and that last year a foundation was formed for academic activities and the results were encouraging with many entering the university and one student topping the A/L results from Colombo district. He added that while swimming did not have a foundation, this could be one of the tasks that the new OBU committee would have to undertake in 2011/12.

Batch Group Matters
Harold Jansz suggested that we announce the date for the dinner as early as possible.

Srinath Fernando said that the idea of the Elders’ home should not be abandoned and Brian Ratnayake said that a proper feasibility study needs to be done before assistance can be sought from any source.

The President said that these matters would be taken up as appropriate by the new committee.

Conclusion
There being no other business, the meeting concluded at 7.30 p.m. with short eats and cool drinks served.
